20 Witchy Books to Read If You Love Practical Magic (opens in a new tab)

Reactor's Liz Parker rounds up 20 witchy novels for Practical Magic fans, timed to the film sequel's September release. Alongside Alice Hoffman's own four-book Owens series, the list leans on sisterhood and family curses, with gentler picks such as Sangu Mandanna's The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, the triplet-run magical tearoom of The Crescent Moon Tearoom, and Celestine Martin's seaside romp Witchful Thinking. Parker notes that a few run darker.

Why it's cozy: Like Gillian turning up on Sally's doorstep, the sisters in several of these picks find their way back to each other when it counts.

Brazil Ends Long Tradition of 6-Day Workweek via Constitutional Amendment (opens in a new tab)

Good News Network reports that Brazil’s senate voted 75 to 1 to end the customary 6-day workweek. Brazil was one of the richest nations still keeping it, with a full-time week of 44 hours.

Why it's cozy: A second weekly day off for Brazilian workers, pitched by the senate leader as more time with family, hands back hours for rest and home.

Treasure Island (opens in a new tab)

Robert Louis Stevenson's novel opens at the Admiral Benbow inn, where a boy and a frightened old sailor sit with a sea chest before the story becomes a voyage. LibriVox reads the whole book. The cozy part is that inn at the start, and it is worth a listen when you want the fireside before the map takes over.

Why it's cozy: Following a boy from an inn fireside to buccaneers and buried gold, read aloud a chapter at a time, feels like being told an adventure at bedtime again.

Simple ‘Soil Steaming’ Found as Effective Replacement for Chemicals in Organic Strawberry Farming (opens in a new tab)

Good News Network, citing the LA Times, says UC Santa Cruz researchers are testing steam in place of the chemical fumigants used to sterilize strawberry soil. In a trial with four organic growers, machines pumped steam into the beds before planting, and longtime farmer Rod Koda saw bigger, healthier plants and more fruit. It could give organic farms, which cannot use those chemicals, a way to fight soil diseases like fusarium wilt.

Why it's cozy: An old greenhouse trick, plain steam, could spare organic strawberry growers from betting a whole harvest on luck, which is a gentle kind of progress.

Springtime (opens in a new tab)

The Internet Archive credits Walt Disney Studios for Springtime, dates it 24 October 1929, and marks it public domain. The page calls it the third Silly Symphony, names Ub Iwerks as director and Carl W. Stalling for the music, and this copy runs 6 minutes and 15 seconds. It is worth a play when you want a short musical cartoon you can finish in one sitting.

Why it's cozy: A six-minute Silly Symphony from 1929, set to Carl Stalling's music, sneaks a little springtime into the shortening days of October.

🪶 Quote · public domain

“Beware, for I am fearless and therefore powerful.”

Mary Shelley, Frankenstein (1818)

Why it's cozy: Shelley's creature delivers his warning from the safety of the page, a pleasant shiver for the run-up to Halloween.

A Prayer for the Crown-Shy (opens in a new tab)

Sibling Dex and Mosscap leave the village and walk from settlement to settlement, asking people what they need. Becky Chambers keeps the second Monk and Robot novella on small conversations: a roadside meal, a crowded town, and what a good life looks like when no one is keeping score.

Why it's cozy: Sibling Dex and Mosscap travel with no quest to win, only the habit of checking on strangers, which makes kindness itself the whole plot.
