Ginger-Apple Pumpkin Soup (opens in a new tab)

Jeanine Donofrio of Love and Lemons roasts a sugar pumpkin, apple, onion and garlic in the oven, then blends them with coconut milk, fresh ginger, cardamom and a little cayenne. No pot is needed, butternut squash can stand in for the pumpkin, and the seeds roast up crisp for scattering on top.

Why it's cozy: While the pumpkin roasts for most of an hour, there is time to set the table, and one batch feeds four to six.

🫖 Tea to try

Chai Bright (opens in a new tab)

Smith Teamaker's Chai Bright is a seasonal black tea blend of Assam, Ceylon and Zheng Shan teas with ginger, cassia, cardamom, orange peel, mace and clove. The maker lists orange marmalade and black peppercorn among its tasting notes, and it comes in sachets or as loose leaf.

Why it's cozy: Five minutes of steeping makes each cup a short pause in the day, and the orange peel and clove suit the first frosty mornings.

Celestial Smoky Cinnamon – Standard Candle (opens in a new tab)

This limited edition candle from P.F. Candle Co.'s Celestial Collection is poured in Los Angeles. It is soy wax with cotton core wicks in a smoky grey glass jar, and it burns for about 40 to 50 hours. The scent moves from bitter orange and mandarin through nutmeg and cardamom to cassia bark, patchouli and incense.

Why it's cozy: Cinnamon, orange and a hint of bonfire smoke fill a room with the smell of autumn evenings spent close to home.

🫖 Tea to try

Holiday Tea Assortment Tin (opens in a new tab)

The Republic of Tea packs fifty holiday tea bags into one tin, five each of ten flavors such as Comfort and Joy, Holiday Chai, Hot Apple Cider and Peppermint Bark. Every bag is wrapped on its own, so the tin works as a sampler for the whole season.

Why it's cozy: Ten holiday flavors, from Comfort and Joy to Peppermint Bark, make one tin a tasting tour of the season, and fifty bags mean plenty for visitors.

🧣 Cozy pick

Spiced Pumpkin – Standard Candle (opens in a new tab)

P.F. Candle Co. hand-pours this seasonal soy candle in Los Angeles, sets it in an amber glass jar with a kraft label and brass lid, and gives it roughly 40 to 50 hours of burn time. Its scent is built around pumpkin pie, with cinnamon and toasted nutmeg up top, butter, brown sugar and clove in the middle, and pumpkin, vanilla and cream at the base.

Why it's cozy: Cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar and butter give the room a pie-just-out-of-the-oven smell, the comfort of baking day without a single dish to wash.

New in Amazon's Candles & Holders this season. Wrap it up for the friend who is always the first to reach for a blanket.

🥧 Cozy recipe

Apple Cider Margarita (opens in a new tab)

Love and Lemons shakes up a fall margarita from apple cider, tequila, orange liqueur and lime, with an optional cinnamon sugar rim and garnishes like star anise or cinnamon sticks. Jeanine Donofrio came up with it in Austin, where October is still too warm for mulled wine. A final taste lets you add more cider for sweetness or more lime for brightness.

Why it's cozy: Mixed in a pitcher up to a day ahead, all eight servings are ready before the doorbell rings, so the host gets to sit down with the guests.

🫖 Tea to try

Maple Apple Cider (opens in a new tab)

Stash Tea builds this caffeine-free herbal blend on smooth rooibos, with cinnamon, hibiscus and natural maple, apple and caramel flavors. It comes in boxes of 18 tea bags and steeps for three to five minutes, and Stash's blenders call it sweet and spiced with just enough apple.

Why it's cozy: Maple, apple and cinnamon over rooibos taste like a farm-stand cider, a sweet bit of fall you can steep without leaving the house.

[Sample Reading] Kanako Meno's Fruit Basket 《Cozy Mystery》 (opens in a new tab)

On note, Akane Tsukimori shares a sample from a new short story collection, Kanako Meno's Fruit Basket, headed to the Bungaku Furima Tokyo 43 literary fair. Its seven stories mix gentle mysteries and romantic comedy, including one written just for the book. In the excerpt, Kanako teases a reporter named Masaru about how beautifully he arranges a plate of sliced Sun Fuji apples.

Why it's cozy: One story here is a mystery about little more than drinking juice, so the stakes stay tiny and the fruit and banter carry it.

🧣 Cozy pick

Witching Hour Candle (opens in a new tab)

Homesick pours its Witching Hour candle from a soy wax blend with cotton wicks, scented with earthy moss, violet and tart apple. The 13.75 ounce jar burns for roughly 60 to 80 hours, and the glass can be reused once the wax is gone.

Why it's cozy: With moss, violet and tart apple meant to conjure a bubbling cauldron, an ordinary night in gets to play at witchcraft.

Book Dragon Banter's latest video continues the hosts' buddy read of Between by L.L. Starling, this time covering chapters 10 through 17 of Part 1. Judging by the episode title, Sage, Katherine and Zinzi Bree have witches, dark wizards and some rather unchivalrous knights in shining armor to talk over.

Why it's cozy: Reading one novel together a handful of chapters at a time, the three hosts make each episode feel like a book club you can join from the sofa.

Light a candle at dusk instead of the overhead light

When the sky starts to dim, light one candle and a single lamp instead of the ceiling light. Let your eyes adjust and notice how much softer the room feels.

Why it's cozy: Swapping the ceiling light for one candle and a lamp turns nightfall into something you notice rather than something that just happens.

Lightly crush cardamom pods, a cinnamon stick, a slice of ginger and a few peppercorns, then simmer them with black tea and milk for five minutes. Strain into your biggest mug and sweeten to taste.

Why it's cozy: Crushing whole spices by hand and letting them simmer makes the brewing itself a five-minute pause, while the kitchen fills with cardamom and ginger.
