Pride and Prejudice (opens in a new tab)

Jane Austen's novel keeps to a small neighborhood: visits, a dance, and two people who misread each other for most of the book. LibriVox volunteers read Pride and Prejudice straight through, so you can live in that village for a while. It is cozy because the stakes are social and domestic, and worth starting when you want wit inside a small household.

Why it's cozy: A whole circle of volunteers took turns reading the chapters, so the Bennets' calls and balls reach you in many voices, like a village talking.

Good News Network reports that a new crocodilian species is now recognized from fossils taken from a rock layer quarried by early Egyptians to construct the Sphinx. Much like the famous Egyptian landmark, this fossilized reptile lacks the end of its nose.

Why it's cozy: After a hundred years filed under the wrong name, this Cairo gavial finally has its own, plus a small shared joke with the noseless Sphinx.

🪶 Quote · public domain

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”

Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice (1813)

Why it's cozy: Austen opens with a dry joke about neighbors playing matchmaker, a promise that the trouble ahead will be gossip and courtship rather than danger.

Bookshops & Bonedust (opens in a new tab)

Before the coffee shop, Viv is a young orc pulled off the road by an injury. She washes up in a sleepy beach town and starts putting a dusty bookshop back in order. Travis Baldree's prequel keeps the stakes small: shelves, regulars, and one mystery the town would rather leave buried.

Why it's cozy: An injured orc stuck in a seaside town finds that tidying a dusty old bookshop is how she learns to slow down and belong somewhere.

Tribe Just a Signature Away from Recovering 1,100 Ancestral Acres Along Undammed Elwha River (opens in a new tab)

Good News Network reports that 20 years after a Washington state dam was scheduled to come down, 1,100 acres of habitat along the Lower Elwha River is coming back after a century underwater. Now, 171 years after the land left their control, and 114 years after the water covered it, the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe is one signature short of having it all returned to them.

Why it's cozy: Elders say the Klallam were blessed into being on these once-flooded acres, so one last signature would give a people back the place where they began.
